DIY Picture Framing

To make DIY picture frames the hobbyist needs to have an idea of how the finished product will turn out. The result will depend on materials used, skill of the hobbyist and the type of artwork being framed.

To make your own photo frame, most hobbyists will have a supply of wood molding or plastic molding available from retailer or op shops, and glass cut to size. If moldings are not correct lengths they will need tools to cut correct angles and a saw that is sharp enough not to bur the edges of the molding. When making a DIY picture frame remember to measure twice and cut once. This is good advice to follow when cutting for diy picture framing or diy photo framing. Each angle must match the next, care should be taken to follow guidelines accurately.

Keeping the frame together with nails and glue will need delicate work with the hammer and clamps to keep the molding in position until the glue dries. DIY picture framing accessories include the tacks, delicate nails and clamps. Hooks, wire, chain or cord will be needed for the back, backing paper and masking tape too are handy for a neat finish to the back of the frame. Not only for appearance but to protect the board, paper or artwork being displayed. Keeping cockroaches, mold and mildew from the artwork’s back is as important as protecting the displayed surface. Glue, the angled guide for the saw, and a spacious workbench are also desirable to achieve the best results.

Once the frame is cut to size and the moldings set into position, then glass can be cut to size. If making a diy picture frame there may be no need for glass, or a mat before placing the picture in the frame. To make photo frames there is a need for glass and often a mat will add a professional look to the finished product.

Hobbyists who want to know how to make a cloth photo frame will need to go through the first stages. After deciding on the size of the frame they should allow for extra length to accommodate the thickness of the cloth. Applying washed and dried cloth with glue can be tricky, again the use of clamps will help keep cloth flat. Once the frame is put together the cloth can be applied. Staples are used to secure the cloth before smoothing it over the wood or plastic frame. Then once the cloth is tight glue or staples are used to keep it in place.

When you make your own photo frames there is the satisfaction of having created a work of art. Diy picture framing can be inexpensive and rewarding.
